Strategic Guidance for Sustained Growth: Rural Living Environments

In 2003, Don and Leanne Negley leveraged their experience in marketing, healthcare facilities leadership and working with people with disabilities to launch Rural Living Environments, their business serving people with developmental disabilities and their families. Business plan assistance and coaching from the Entrepreneur Fund helped ensure the business launched successfully.

How can a successful startup attain stability and sustain long-term growth?

“The three-legged stool of the startup phase was an attorney, an accountant, and – most importantly – the advisors at the Entrepreneur Fund,” says Don. In the years since starting the business, the Negley’s have continued with business advising. They also completed the Entrepreneur Fund’s business accelerator program, Be Strategic: Grow Your Business. They credit both for enhanced clarity and momentum. “They’ve helped us grow in a more efficient way.” Key moves the Negley’s have made for growth include:

  • Embrace technology, such as cloud-based record-keeping and
    interactive TV for medical appointments
  • Make a strategic growth plan and keep it updated
  • Expand into areas with substantial need and growth potential

Now with five facilities, eight service sites, 40 employees and over $2 million in annual revenue, Rural Living Environments has averaged 10% yearly growth and continues to hit growth targets. The company is currently preparing to expand into a new market.
